Through a range of educational programs and workshops, Community Engagement Services help people gain the skills and resources to help themselves or someone else in a crisis or difficult situation.

YOUTH

PIECE OF MIND WORKSHOPS:
LIFE EDUCATION FOR YOUTH

Piece of Mind Workshops build awareness of social, emotional, and mental health issues that are common in the lives of young people and give practical tips for reaching out and finding support when these issues begin to surface. Workshops are delivered in high school classrooms by professionally trained volunteers. Each workshop focuses on a key topic and is targeted to a particular age group.

SUICIDE AWARENESS
Target Audience: Grade 9
Complementary Classes in BC: English, Active Health and Planning

Through this interactive presentation, students gain an awareness of warning signs, risk factors and feelings of suicide. Students also develop the skills to help someone who may be suicidal or experiencing a crisis. This workshop takes place over one or two sessions, and gives students a safe environment to talk and learn about suicide through a video and activities. In the second session, students build on their learning from the first session and practice effective communication skills.

STRESS MANAGEMENT
Target Audience: Senior High School Students
Complementary Classes in BC: Planning 11/12

A fun and insightful presentation aimed at helping senior high school students recognize stress levels and gain effective stress management and coping skills. Time management, organization and assertiveness are just some of the skills students gain through this workshop. These skills are essential in managing and coping with everyday stress, as well as added stress during exams, final projects and beginning life after high school!

STRESS MANAGEMENT AND SUICIDE AWARENESS FOR ESL CLASSES
Target Audience: ESL Levels 3 and 4

An interactive presentation designed to create a safe place for students to recognize and talk about their stressors, and how they can manage stress in their lives. Students also learn about depression and how extreme stressors can be risk factors for suicide. The session is wrapped up with an activity on how to help a friend who may be in crisis. This workshop is specifically designed for ESL students and creates safe learning opportunities through innovative activities that engage students by working in small groups, defining new vocabulary and participating in group discussions.

TEEN RELATIONSHIP ABUSE PREVENTION (TRAP)
Target Audience: Grade 8
Complementary Classes in BC: Active Health, Planning and CAPP

The TRAP workshop creates awareness of healthy and unhealthy relationships. Students learn about relationship abuse and gain skills to recognize an unhealthy relationship. Students also learn how to help someone who may be in an unhealthy relationship. In this workshop, a safe environment is created for students to discuss this sensitive topic through the use of group discussions, videos and small group activities. This workshop uses a peer-to-peer model, where senior high students and young adults deliver the workshops to younger students.

STEPPING STONES

Target Audience: Grades 11 and 12
Complementary Classes: Human Services Career Prep Classes

Organized in partnership with selected high schools, Youth Stepping Stones offers a range of practical community-based opportunities for Grades 11 and 12 students in leadership development classes to learn, experience, reflect, and build skills that help in making informed choices for the future. Opportunities include program volunteering, training in helping skills, job shadowing in the human service field, mentoring, and involvement in socially responsible community development projects. Benefits to students include added exposure, knowledge, skills, practical experience, community engagement, and confidence.

STEPPING OUT
Target Audience: Grades 6 and 7

Stepping Out is a multi-session educational program designed to build skills and emotional resiliency among pre-adolescents in preparation for their teen years. Topics include diversity, assertiveness, stress and coping, peer pressure and bullying, social problem solving, friendships and role models, and accessing community resources. High school students are professionally trained to deliver this popular program in local elementary schools.
